Everyone has heard the phrase, “stepping out of your comfort zone,” but why is this important? “Stepping out of your comfort zone,” it means doing things that you don’t feel comfortable with doing. Stepping out of your comfort zone is important for self-growth. It helps you grow creatively and empower your self-confidence while learning about yourself. It is important to note you are never too old to step out of your comfort zone. However, it is easier said than done. You may be wondering “how do I even step out of my comfort zone?” My suggestion is by following one or all the seven steps below:
Tips for Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone
#1: Do something that you normally would not do.
This can vary depending on the person, but it does not have to be something drastic. One example could be talking to a stranger while you pick up your daily coffee or listening to a different radio station on the way to work. People get so comfortable with their everyday routine that one minor change could be the start to leaving their comfort zone.
#3: Do something that challenges you.
If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you. If you are not a runner, maybe try going for a short ten-minute run. You could also try a puzzle or word scramble! Challenging the brain is the best way for self growth.
#4: Think about why.
Having a reason for wanting to do things, makes you more committed to your goals. What will you gain from these challenges? How will they change you as a person?
#5: Buddy system.
Having a friend by your side makes it a lot easier to face new things. It can be hard to do things alone. Your buddy should be aware of what you are doing and want to go along with it, too. If you decide you want to learn how to cook, ask a friend who’s into food to take a cooking class with you. I love to go to the gym with my friends, especially a new gym where I do not feel very comfortable.
#6: Break the activity/challenge into steps.
You don’t have to do the activity all at once. If you’re feeling intimidated by the challenge you’ve picked, make it a multi-step process. Conquering your fears gradually can help ease you into new challenges.
#7: Give yourself an ultimatum and remain positive.
If you are not strict with yourself, it is easier to steer away from your goals. Tell yourself that you’re trying this new thing, or you’ll “take away” some other daily activity you enjoy. Holding yourself accountable is the hardest part, but it will make for a rewarding experience. It is easy when trying to be strict with yourself to also be negative. The biggest obstacle keeping you from stepping out of your comfort zone is fear, especially fear of failure. Instead of focusing on the possibility of failure, think of steps outside your comfort zone as opportunities. You may be right around the corner from changing your life for the better!
There are many other ways to step out of your comfort zone. Take it one day at a time so you do not feel overwhelmed, and you will slowly see the progress you are making. Just remember there’s not a lot of room for adventure and excitement in your comfort zone. To add a little zest to your life and experience the personal growth you’re after, it’s important to try new (sometimes scary) things. Stretch your limits! Getting outside of your comfortable box may be tough at first, but facing unfamiliar challenges can make you happier and more fulfilled in the long run!
